DESCRIPTION:
The human race, once numbering in the billions, has dwindled to five hundred or so souls. Twenty years ago, life on Earth was annihilated. David Adler has survived in these circumstances by keeping a low profile and minding his own business. Now, the few remaining colonists on Mars scratch out their living in the worn husk of New Houston, a once vibrant settlement. But when he gets a knock on the door from his old flame, Oksana Levi, everything changes. Outside its walls, a perpetual storm rages — acidic snow and rain – the result of a failed attempt to terraform the planet decades earlier. Adler soon finds himself pulling at the threads of a conspiracy by a millenarian cult and its bloodthirsty father figure to do away with life on the red planet once and for all.. Mars’ lead engineer and Oksana’s current boyfriend, Carl Epstein, has been brutally murdered in his workshop, and Oksana pleads for Adler’s help
"A dark and gritty colonial Mars novel" according to AB. I enjoyed this book, although I felt it ended right when it started getting interesting - it ended right where it should have been beginning and I felt robbed that I didn't get to see the next generation of Martians achieve their goals and realize their dreams in terms of terraforming, normal food, and a final determination as to Earth's fate. If there is a sequel, I would like to read it. I was bummed that so many good characters will killed. I would have liked to have seen t. Victor R. Casados said A great read! Fine First Effort This venture into the world of colonization of Mars by terra-formation provides the backdrop for an interesting study of human reactions to a plan gone bad. It is, after the first few chapters of background and discovery of a critical loss to the meager community, a fast paced action story of a race to prevent final destruction of the colony - and of humanity. That gives but a brief outline of an entertaining read with a cast of fascinating characters. Frankel has established
