I. Detest-Neiklot, J.R. said Tedious. This was my first ever David Drake book and, I am sad to say, will probably be my last unless I encounter something that I feel I simply must read. Now, granted, this is apparently one of his earlier works and perhaps he had improved, but I honestly don't care enough to find out. I got this book as I am an enthusiast of Ancient Rome in general (and the Ancient Roman military in particular), but overall found it to be weak.The Pros: Drake m. Good Mix of Combat, Science Fiction, and History Although I've been a fan of military science fiction books for a while, this was my first introduction of David Drake. I'm glad to say that I wasn't disappointed. Other people have already done a great job of covering the plot, so I won't bore you by going over it again. However, I would like to point out that this book is not a collection of short stories. The book has several independent military campaigns in it, but they involve the sam. "Five Stars" according to Amazon Customer. Loved it! Was very surprised by how it developed and ended.
