Great book John Stuart King is a well-known author. When he listens to a sermon one day about being kind to the homeless, he can't stop thinking about the issue. He decides to become a tramp himself to see what it's like--providing a good source for his next story. He discovers that no one seems to truly care about tramps. That is, until he stumbles across a family in the country. The Elliott family provides him with a job on their farm. They treat him kindly. Helen Elliott, the oldest girl in the family, is beautiful--and above all, truthful. Co. "no Grace Livingston Hill" according to RedBird1. I am sad to say that I was very disappointed in this book. Because Isabella Alden was Grace Livingston Hill's aunt and was so influential in her written work, I thought I would enjoy her. While the story line wasn't too bad (although the progression was painfully slow) I did not find many of the characters very likable. While I understand that perhaps Alden was a product of her times, I felt that Hildreth's character especially was narrow, self righteous, and un reasonably elitist. While class issues come up often in Grace Livingston H. Interesting historical novel about relationships double u twice I enjoyed this book. The author is the aunt of Grace Livingston Hill, who writes lighter Christian romances. Isabella Alden doesn't "preach" quite as much as her niece but her stories contain truths and something to think about. Also, the characters are more realistic as are the endings. I recommend her work if you enjoy stories about relationships that you can learn something from.

Taking the minister’s sermon to heart, John Stuart resolves to live the life of a tramp so he can better understand how he can accurately write about the plight of the homeless. In fact, no one offers him help until he meets the Elliott family. But the experience is more challenging than John ever imagined. They take him in, give him a comfortable bed, a warm meal and a job taking care of their horses. A wealthy and successful author, John Stuart King has everything he could want in life. People, he discovers, are more wary of the homeless than they are willing to lend a hand. He wants to tell Hildreth the truth about his identity—that he’s not a homeless tramp, after all—but will she ever be able to forgive his deception? This edition of the 1897 classic Christian novel includes group discussion questions, a biography of the author and an int
