. His portraits of colonial life reflect his Puritan heritage and offer fascinating profiles of individuals who strive for freedom from social conventions. Born on the fourth of July in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the stories that lie at the heart of the American Romantic movement

Very slow and descripted This is my second time reading this book, why, I have no idea! It is a classic and I love the word usages in creating such description. But, the descriptions just go on and on and on and on. I realize that way back then, before TV, internet, etc. the authors had to paint a very detailed description as to what is going on in the story. If you like a lot of description, this is a must-read book. If you like a lot more dialog. Don't mean to criticize Mr. N. Hawthorne but I had never read this book before and I love reading the classics. Mr. Hawthorne was extremely verbose in this novel. The story line was interesting but there was so much description of every minute detail of the house, the garden, how people were dressed, etc. The descriptions did paint a picture but I wish he had moved the plot along a bit more quickly. Then he wraps everything up in a neat little package in the last cha. "Just ok" according to Johnny A.. About 80 percent of this book is dedicated to describing the characters' state of mind and the environment around them. Only about twenty percent is actually about actions taken by the characters. I guess if you like that sort of thing, you will enjoy the book. It just wasn't for me.

A dark and unjust past informs of the plot of this sometimes-ghost story, and Hawthorne masterfully brings about a redemptive ending which is, for a novel as foreboding and sinister as this, quite happy.. The novel contains traces of Hawthorne’s own family history, of which he felt deep shame and remorse for their part in the Salem Witch Hunt of the late 17th century. Lovers of gothic horror stories would be remiss in passing by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables, whose titular setting is based upon a real house in Salem

. His enduring view of the darkness at the heart of the national soul has made "The House of the Seven Gables" a landmark of American literature. Only two young people stand in his way--a visiting country cousin and an enigmatic boarder skilled in mesmerism.Hawthorne envisioned this family drama of evil, revenge, and resolution as a microcosm of Salem's own history as in idealistic society corrupted by greed and pride. From the Back CoverA gloomy New England mansion provides the setting for this classic exploration of ancestral guilt and its expiation through the love and goodwill of succeeding generations.Nathaniel Hawthorne drew inspiration for this story of an immorally obtained proper
