DESCRIPTION:
One day, Sally's mother indeed brings home a real lion cub. Newberry's simple, now nostalgic illustrations provide a delightful background to this very sweet story of a little girl named Sally, and her insatiable desire for a real, live lion. Herbert the Lion, originally published in 1931, was Caldecott Honor author/illustrator Clare Turlay Newberry's first book. Clearly something has to be done, but the thought of sending Herbert to the zoo is intolerable. Faster than you can flip the pages, Herbert is a full-grown lion--a friendly creature, but fearsome just the same. Sally and Herbert are inseparable. A lovely story I've lost count of the number of times I've read this to my childrenThere is something so appealing in this story. It has a great sense of an earlier time and place, when "the milkman or the postman or the grocer or the butcher's boy came to the door", but my children love the child-centeredness of the story, as if they could express a want for something, like the little girl who wants "a lion, a real live lion", and I could be like the mother in the story who "one day brought her one from downto. They absolutely loved the illustrations and story line and I lost count of how many times we reread this book, as well as other books by Newberry. Jennifer said Timeless!. The illustrations seem very contemporary---maybe a little retro, but ultimately timeless. The story is charming as well, and I appreciated how the parents in the story didn't dismiss the lion's needs---the family "pet" was treated like a member of the family (not that I think lions should be pets, of course, but that's not the point). Overall, a delightful addition to any young child's library.. 1. The illustrations seem very contemporary---maybe a little retro, but ultimately timeless.
